Specimen Paper 2 Topic 4: Societies in Transition (1400-1700) Question 7

7. Examine the social impact of two scientific or technological developments from the period 1400 to 1700.

We discussed this and the other selected questions from the previous blog post in class last time - for possible events, ideas, developments that could possibly be used to address the prompt.

We will go through the specific demands of the prompt the second half of class on Monday. Then we will review (?) the outlining format.  So nothing until after class Monday 14th, then,....

Please craft an outline for this particular prompt and post it here as a reply/ comment to this post due by the end of the day Thursday.  Then enjoy your long weekend.

On Monday I will set up part two for this exercise, which will need you to post here as part of the comments on your peers' comments.  So you will need to check back here - the Blog for those instructions.  I will be out of the building doing work for the IB, beyond LHS.

  2. Thesis: The Scientific developments of the telescope and microscope had a significant social impact. To elaborate, these advancements improved the perception of biology, astronomy, and may have influenced the Enlightenment.

    Microscope:
    -develops medicine
    - medical/bio discoveries (helps the ill)

    - changed idea of space (and god)
    - Challenged the church

    Enlightenment:
    - scientific method
    - also challenged the church (reason)
    - new methods in learning/encouraged critical thinking/discovery

    4. You have a lot of great details and information - especially for the pencil. However, for the microscope, some of your points are a little disconnected and you have a lot of ideas. To clarify, there's nothing really wrong with that but it runs the risk of creating a disconnection in your argument and might stop you from developing a stronger argument with all of your details/ideas

    Examine the social impact of two scientific or technological developments from the period 1400 to 1700.

    Intro
    Thesis: The technological inventions of the fifteenth century drastically changed society, and how people in their respective societies functioned.
    Body 1
    Development 1: Printing Press
    How did society change: The printing press was first invented in 1439 by Johannes Gutenberg of Germany. The printing press allowed manuscripts to be distributed around Europe and the rest of the world at a relatively low cost. This meant that there was a significant distribution of ideas that had never happened before.
    Body 2
    Development 2: The Globe
    How did society change: The first globe, as designed by Martin Behaim of Germany around 1490 allowed people to see what the Earth looked like geographically for the first time. This globe served as a representation of the knowledge of the Earth in the fifteenth century.
    Body 3
    Synthesis, negatives, connections
    Printing Press: - spread ideas about religion which angered some people because it went against their beliefs
    More people were able to learn to read because print was available to them(allowed people to rise up in society).

    Heliocentric model (Copernicus)
    Challenged church and social views on following norms
    Gave people ideas on being inquisitive and seek answers for scientific but more importantly social structure and its effectiveness.

    Acted as agent of change, catalyzing revolutions/social reform

    Advanced thinking of year, month, days, gave us modern calendar

    3. You have a lot of good information about the printing press but you're missing specific dates. You might also want to add more things to the heliocentric model - How did the calendar change things?

    5. Your two points are good however your thesis could be improved. You want it to be formal so don't include anything like "I believe" or "I think". Your thesis doesn't really answer the prompt - it's not asking for the best it's asking for you to analyze the social impacts. While that is what you're answering with your points, using the word, "best" makes your argument a little vague.

    6. I like how you used guiding questions to form information about the inventions. I am still wondering what social effects that these two inventions had. I might include another paragraph specifically on how these two were used by society, and take the "I think" out of the thesis statement to make it more formal.

    Information about Harvey:
    Studied medicine in the late 1500s
    Was a fellow at the royal college of physicians in 1607
    Became a lecturer of surgery
    Appointed physician at St. Bartholomew’s hospital
    A supporter of the monarchy
    The physician to King James I and Charles I
    Lived in Europe during the witch hunt and had to examine four women because so.
    Blood circulation research
    Is book is Exercitatio Anatomica de Motu Cordis et Sanguinis in Animalibus (anatomical exercise of on the motion of the heart and blood and animal)
    Blood flows throughout all of the human body
    Being pumped through a single system of arteries and veins
    It is circulated and pumped through the heart and lungs
    Prior to him, it was believed that there are two systems
    One was purple and one was red
    His main experiment was about blood flowing to the heart

    2. Seishu Hanaoka General Anesthesia Discovery
    About Hanaoka:
    Specialized in breast cancer and general anesthetics in surgery
    Was trying to make a new and improved anesthetic out of traditional Chinese methods
    Was the first person to perform surgery with anesthesia
    The anesthetic was originally a hot drink
    He was able to help inflammation, wounds, ulcers, cancer, etc with this discovery
    Passed it down to students

    3. You have a great amount of information, and it gives a good impression of what each invention is about. Even though the details are wonderful, I would try to reduce it a little bit and save them for later when you are writing the actual IA. You might also include how these inventions played out in society to help see the social impacts. Otherwise, great outline!

  10. The Scientific discoveries that led to have a drastic societal impact was the discovery of the telescope, and the creation of the Heliocentric Model
    Telescope (1608)
    -Changed the idea that Earth was at the center of the universe
    -Revealed new planets and asteroids
    -The discoveries were considered false according to the Roman Catholic Church
    Heliocentric Model
    -astronomical model in which the Earth and planets revolve around the Sun at the center of the Solar System.
    -This model argued that the Earth was not at the center, and that it wasn’t stationary
    -This theory went against the church and the teaching of Ptolemy
    How did society respond to these discoveries?
    -The church spoke out and said that these discoveries were false
    -Galileo as a result of many of discoveries was put to death

    Thesis: (Printing press/Heliocentric theory; 1400-1700) The invention of the printing press and the development of the Heliocentric Theory laid the foundations for structural changes within the government.
    What did they do?
    Printing Press (Popularization; MECHANIZED; Between 1440-1450)
    Made reproducing books much more efficient and simple
    Efficiency created accessibility (decreased pricing, more books available to buy)
    Rag paper cheaper to produce than parchment (also contributed to decreased pricing, books no longer cost the same amount as a house but rather a teacher’s monthly salary. Still for the rich- but not limited to the incredibly, incredibly rich anymore)
    Gradual migration to Venice; explosion of information spread
    Caused news networks to sprout up along trade ports
    Although many couldn’t read, people would gather at the pub to hear a paid reader recite the news
    Accelerated the renaissance
    Censorship
    Scientific discoveries printed were more accurately
    Heliocentric Theory (Published in 1543)
    Discredited the Bible’s universe
    Changed calendars
    Encouraged more scientific discoveries
    Therefore built more foundation for separation of church and state, as scientific rev

    Social Impact
    Printing Press
    By making censorship hard to achieve, thus prevented the govt and church from controlling information; By assisting the protestant reformation, also assisted in breaking uniformity of religion and allowance to think for oneself and interpret for oneself; allowed accelerated spread of information and rate of literacy increased; Accessibility interacted with the protestant reformation but also allowed further access to information and education to those who weren't wealthy furthering thinking for oneself and garnering knowledge: therefore allowing citizens to question government with said knowledge
    Heliocentric Theory
    Discredited the bible's original description of the universe, therefore laying another primer of questioning-- If the bible could be wrong, other things (such as the government, could be wrong, for example with absolutist kings- 'God said so' 'why did God say so? Why did God make you king?' 'uhhh because god said so'; Laid foundations for further scientific discoveries such as further positioning of the universe; therefore lead to loosening grip of church on govt; loosening of church on govt took away part of appeal of absolutist kings who were supposed to have been chosen by god, and then became instead of a messenger from god to rule the peoples-- a tyrant.
    Synthesis
    The printing press and heliocentric theory did interact to create this effect, as the printing press improved scientific writings' accuracy and the heliocentric theory built upon a foundation of questioning and knowledge the printing press laid. Etc, etc, this outline is getting very long.
    Conclusion
    Without the printing press or the heliocentric theory, it is possible that authoritarian regimes could have thrived for much, much longer. By sparking questioning, free thought, the spread of information, and changes to systems that seemed unchangeable the printing press and heliocentric theory worked interactively to create the conditions needed to begin to pull society away from absolutist kingdoms.

    Intro (Thesis): The scientific and technological developments in the fifteenth-century drastically changed society, and how people’s perspectives have with these new inventions.

    Body 1
    Invention one: Telescope
    How did society change: The telescope was invented in 1608 by a guy named Hans Lippershey of Germany. It has changed society because it has revealed geography and weather on the planets in our solar system. Telescopes have also revealed new planets and asteroids

    Body 2
    Invention two: Globe
    How did society change: The globe was designed by Martin Behiam from Germany in 1490 allowed people to see Earth looks like and its shape.

    Body 3
    Telescope: light is reflecting off the objective, rather than passing through it, only one side of the reflector telescope's objective needs to be perfect.
    Globe: people can see other places more cleary.
